The Marlborough Senior Rep side finished an agonising 4 runs short of defending the Newman Shield in a fine game of cricket last Sunday at Horton Park. Nelson reached 212 from their 50 overs, Jonty Raxworthy top scoring with 52 while Matt Stretch, Jerrym Lamb and Nick Weaver each took 2 wickets. In reply Marlborough was always up with the scoring rate thanks to Corey Bovey (56), Tarin Mason (47), Cooper Roberts (24), Tom Sutherland (24) and Luke Frankland (23) and required 4 from the final ball but Josh Newport held his nerve to bowl a dot ball to give Nelson the win. Marlborough’s next outing is the Stretch Scanlon trophy challenge against Buller in Westport on Sunday 28th Nov.

JT Contracting Dolphins began their TPL campaign with a fine win in Nelson over WTTU on Saturday. Corey Bovey top scored with 23 in Dolphins below par 139 all out batting first but the bowlers were outstanding in dismissing WTTU for 98 with Jerrym Lamb taking 5 for 24, while Hunter Ruffell conceded just 10 runs from 9.2 overs. The Falcons lost by 20 runs to Wakatu chasing 183 with Matthew Stretch (51) and Greg Stretch (43) combining to nearly secure the win. Matthew Stretch was also the pick of the Falcons bowlers with 4-33.
