If you haven’t done so already then now is the time to register for our junior cricket grades which start during the first week of November. Superstar Cricket programmes run over 6 weeks as an introduction to the game for 5 to 7 year olds with centres at Horton Park on Mondays, Seddon Domain on Tuesdays and Renwick School on Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 6.15pm. Next development stage is the Harcourts Superstar Kiwi Cricket competition which runs on Saturday mornings at Lansdowne Park from 9-10am. There are two separate pools – Boy’s Kiwi and Girl’s Super Smash – played with a softer ball and plastic equipment all of which is provided by Marlborough Cricket.
WK 5th Grade on Friday evenings is the first hardball grade and again we have a Girls only grade as well as the boys competition. WK 4th grade is the next step up aimed mainly at year 7 & 8s and played on Saturday mornings.
To register or to find out more about any of our cricket playing or coaching programmes please email eden@marlboroughcricket.co.nz or call the office on 5779050.
Celtic will play Wairau in this Saturday’s Senior grade one day final following final round action last weekend. Celtic made it 3 from 3 with a commanding display against Renwick. Greg Knowles led the way for Celtic with 78 from 50 balls including 6 sixes in his team’s 218 for 9 batting first, Jerrym Lamb contributing 41 from 29 balls, while Ed Gilhooly took 3-29. Luke Frankland struck a fine 73 in Renwick’s reply but they fell short dismissed for 149 to end their final hopes.
There was drama in the other game with Wairau reaching 208 and maximum batting points led once again by Nick Weaver (70) with good support from Joel Lavender (46). In reply Wairau Valley were bowled out for 173 with 4 overs left and crucially 2 runs short of the extra bonus point that would have put them into the final. Sukh Aulakh top scored with a hard hit 35 while Josh Alexander was once again the key bowler for Wairau taking 5-22. Both teams ended on 14 points but Wairau go through virtue of their round robin win over Valley.
The 3rd grade 40 over competition starts this Saturday while Horton Park also hosts the Tasman O50s team who play on Friday and Sunday against a Wellington O50s side. Also on Sunday Marlborough U17s play their Nelson counterparts on the Horton no3 ground while the U15s play Nelson at Oliver Park. Then on Monday our PS Development players play an inter-squad game at Horton Park before Junior grades kick into action the following weekend as our summer of cricket starts to warm up!
