The Marlborough Men’s reps suffered a 1st inning loss to Nelson over the weekend ending their hopes of a Hawke Cup challenge this season. Nelson recovered from 108 for 6 to reach 281 thanks to a superb 96 from David Zohrab. Jaden Adams was the standout bowler for Marlborough with 5 for 77 from 23 overs. In reply Marlborough collapsed to 108 all out, Tim Petrie showing great maturity and patience in making 45 from 182 balls. After Nelson declared its 2nd innings on 191 for 3 Marlborough played out for the draw reaching 94 for 3 with Petrie unbeaten on 22. Marlborough’s next assignment is the Central Districts Chapple Cup 50 over tournament next month.
The Marlborough Primary schools Maroon team performed admirably in the South Island PS tournament in Ashburton last week losing only one game. Several players performed well, Blake Nation making the highest score of the week with 66no v Chch Black while George Wilson had the best bowling figures with 3-6 v Mid Canterbury. The Marlborough PS yellow team also performed admirably at their festival in Christchurch winning 2 of their six matches with captain Lukas Dowling making the highest score (55no) and best bowling figures (2-4) in the win against Chch Harris.
The Marlborough Year 9-10 team made a great start to this week’s CD tournament in Levin with a rare victory over Manawatu. Chasing 265 the Marlborough team got home 8 wickets down with 2 balls to spare thanks to a superb unbeaten 117 from number 5 bat Luke Holdaway (who earlier took 4-36). Openers Ollie Eyles (40) and Sam Young (26) got the innings off to a good start while Luke Petrie (29) provided crucial support in a 6th wicket partnership of 130 with Holdaway.
In the latest round of the SBS Bank 2nd grade T20 competition Wayne Young took 3-15 as Celtic Green dismissed Celtic Gold for only 78 before reaching the target for the loss of 6 wickets after Yadwinder Hundal gave them a scare taking 5-21 from his 4 overs. Renwick were the other winners after making 139 with steady contributions throughout, Karlis Zvagulis top scoring with 26 while Blair Speedy took 4-19 and Caleb Speedy 3-22 for Wairau Valley. In reply Valley fell well short on 111, spinners Tim May and Piers Landon-Lane picking up 2 wickets each. UCVC were the other winners by 80 runs over Wairau with Simon Muir taking 3-9.
In 2nd grade Division 2 games Renwick veterans were too strong for Celtic, Jamie Norton top scoring with 40 in their 142 batting first before Matt Croad took 3-17 as Celtic were dismissed for 124, Couper Robinson and Olly Kennedy both making 33. No result has been received for the Wairau Awatere v Renwick Rugby club game.
