Celtic Green will meet Renwick in this Saturday’s final of the SBS Bank 2nd Grade Challenge Cup following semi-final wins last Saturday. Keiran Gaudin’s 86 from 74 balls was the mainstay of Renwick’s 235 against Kaikoura, Bill Parsons and Thomas Bolton each picking up 2 wickets. In reply Arunesh Attar (45) and Gavy Kalwan (38) kept their team up with the rate but the loss of regular wickets saw them all out for 163 with 11 overs still to bat. Eden Pettigrew, Tim May and Piers Landon-Lane each picked up 2 wickets. Wayne Young with 4-13 was in fine form for Celtic as Wairau were bowled out for a disappointing 75. The Wairau bowlers didn’t make it easy though with Baxter Croad taking 3-22 before the winning runs came with Celtic 7 wickets down.
Wairau Valley had an exciting 1 wicket win over Renwick in the final round of 3rd grade games with Charlie Robinson striking a crucial 46 from 47 balls before final pair Jaden Hollis and Albert Nott made the final 7 runs to squeeze them home. Dane and Maddie Winstanley took 2 wicket each for Renwick while Dad Greg top scored with 28, Finn Maskill had the outstanding figures of 3-16 from 8 overs for Valley. Wairau beat table topping Celtic in the other game to pip Renwick for the 2nd final spot this Saturday. Both 2nd and 3rd grade finals start at 12.30pm at Horton Park.
There were more stand out performances in the final round of WK junior 4th grade games last Saturday as the season finished in perfect conditions, including; Liam Cohen (46), Jesse Englefield (35 & 2-18), Tessa Zillwood (25), Julian Englefield (2-9), Natalie Ellin (2-17), Reon Holdaway (43), Maui de Wildt (28 & 2-27), Amiri Doonan (2-11), Josh Harris (36), Dom Alexander (52), Tamati de Wildt (2-19), Finn Ashworth (30 & 2-9), Noah Hagan (3-26) and George Frampton (2-9).
Our junior awards on Saturday recognised outstanding performers from this summer. Blake Nation was awarded the Eric Shattock trophy for outstanding Primary School rep player with Dom Alexander winning the Morton Cup for outstanding sportsmanship and Billy Hurren the Ewan Stephenson trophy. The Gleeson Shield for junior female player of the year went to Beau Clouston while the Junior female sportsmanship award was presented to Charlotte Brooke-Taylor. Wairau Fantails were the girls grade team of the year for fairplay and good sportsmanship while Renwick Rockets were awarded the 5th grade equivalent (Gregor Cup) and Renwick Royals the Rhoades Fairplay 4th grade trophy.
Senior club, Senior Rep and age group rep awards will be presented this Saturday at our Senior awards evening which will follow the completion of the 2nd and 3rd grade finals from around 6pm at Horton Park.
