The Ultraquip Marlborough Men’s team failed in their bid to reclaim the Newman Shield last Sunday, going down by 6 wickets to Nelson. Batting first all the Marlborough batters made starts but none could go on to make a significant score, Andrew McCaa the top scorer with 29 from 49 balls, while Jared Silvester took 3-15 for Nelson as Marlborough were dismissed for 136 with more than 7 overs still to bat. Defending the small total the home team bowlers bowled well to reduce Nelson to 77 for 4 before an unbroken 62 run partnership between Sean Neal (45) and Fintan Batt (17) saw them home. Griffin Carter was the pick of the Marlborough bowlers with 2 for 24 from 5 overs. Next outing for the team is away to Nelson for round 1 of the Hawke Cup competition on 13-14 December.
