Cricket’s Back! The 2021-22 summer of Cricket is now underway with all grades commencing their seasons over the next few weeks. This Sunday we are holding a Junior Cricket activation day from 9.30 to 11am at Horton Park. It’s a chance to find out more about how to register for cricket, what the different options and play some fun games. We will be running a “swap shop” with some donated cricket gear to give away and you can drop off any old gear that either no longer fits or is no longer used. Mitchell Sports will also be on hand to provide expert advice to anyone looking to buy new equipment.

Unfortunately Covid alert levels in the North Island has meant the postponement of the originally planned visit of Ross Taylor and the Mace trophy but NZ Cricket have managed to send through some giveaways to hand out. The event will of course be run under Level 2 guidelines and those attending must sign in on the Covid app and observe all government protocols to keep us safe and free from the virus.

The season started last weekend with the SBS Bank Senior grade 40 over competition with Renwick and Celtic first round winners. Rueben Kepes top scored for Celtic with 41 in his team’s score of 141 batting first (Jethro Moran 3-15) and Wairau Valley were dismissed for only 48 in reply, Jaden Adams taking 4-18, Hayden Simpson 3-6. Corey Bovey was the key man for Renwick with an unbeaten 40 in a tense two wicket victory with only 2 balls remaining. Hunter Ruffell took 3-18 for Wairau while Nick Weaver top scored in their total of 113 which nearly proved enough. Nick Wilder (3-23) and Akhil Pant (2-9) were the pick of a steady Renwick attack.

This Saturday Renwick take on Wairau Valley on Horton 3 while Wairau face Celtic on Horton 1. Also this weekend our Primary school age group development players take part in a series of games and coaching sessions on Friday evening and on Sunday as we confirm are various training squads for the season and teams to attend South Island festivals during January. Then from Monday Horton Park will be hosting the South Island Masters Cricket T20 festival as part of the larger Master’s games event taking place in Marlborough at various venues.

WK Junior 4th and 5th grade competitions get underway over the first weekend of November which also sees the start of our Harcourts Kiwi Cricket grades and the Superstar Cricket programme for our youngest players. There is still plenty of time to register for any of our junior grades by emailing development@marlboroughcricket.co.nz or by visiting our website.
